Understanding shingles
Shingles is a painful condition — and that pain can persist for months.
This viral infection causes a blistering rash, often in a stripe across one side of your torso. Shingles can also develop near your eye. This can cause permanent eye damage if left untreated.
On top of that painful rash, shingles can come with other symptoms like fatigue, fever, and headaches.
All told, it’s not a condition you want to experience. And you don’t have to sit idly by as your risk for shingles increases as you age.
The shingles vaccine for adults 50 and over
In 2017, the FDA approved a new shingles vaccine called Shingrix. This vaccine is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that all healthy adults age 50 and older get this vaccine. You need two doses of the vaccine, spaced a few months apart, for it to be as effective as possible.
To make it convenient for you, Dr. Zarreii can administer both doses right here at our office.
There’s no age cap on Shingrix. If you’re 50 or above, talk to us about scheduling your vaccine if you haven’t already received Shingrix.
You can — and should — get vaccinated with Shingrix even if you’ve had shingles. Shingles can return, at which point you’ll have to suffer through all the painful symptoms again. With this two-dose vaccine, you significantly minimize your risk of that unpleasant experience.
With Shingrix in use, health professionals have stopped using the older vaccine called Zostavax. If you were vaccinated against shingles with Zostavax, the CDC and Dr. Zarreii still recommend Shingrix.
